We can all benefit from remembering to stop, look, and listen as pedestrians, children are vulnerable because they are smaller than the vehicles around them, easily distracted, and are less predictable. Here are some tips for back to school safety.
- Don’t wait until the moment that your child needs to walk alone to teach road safety.
- You need all of your senses for proper pedestrian safety – teach your children to stop, look, listen and look again.
- Practice, practice, practice – when traveling through your neighborhood, remind your kids of common hazards.
- Remind children not to enter the roadway, for any reason, between two parked cars. They are unable to see any automobiles headed their way, and drivers are unable to see them until they are well onto the road.
- Remind your children to utilize the sidewalk.
Most of all lead by example. Children learn as much from observing as they do from instruction. Remember good pedestrian habits aren’t just for children.
