Motorcycle Safety in Louisville - Some Tips to Prevent Accidents

Many Louisville accidents can be prevented by proper motorcycle maintenance and attentiveness while on the road. Below we captured a few tips to help you stay safe!

Before starting out on the road:

  1. Be familiar with your owner’s manual and the recommended maintenance schedule set out by the manufacturer. Keep your manual with you in the event of an emergency, there could be useful information contained within it.
  2. Check the tires for proper pressure, wear, or damage. Also check that your brakes engage properly. Once a month, check your battery for proper charge.
  3. Check the controls, lights, turn signals, mirrors, horn and fluid levels.
  4. Ensure your sidestand stays safely up during operation.
  5. Dirt can disguise a potential problem, so try to keep your motorcycle clean.

While on the road:

  1. Always be aware of possible hazards around you, such as turning vehicles, drivers that seem inattentive (swerving), debris or changing road conditions.
  2. Make sure you are visible to others – wear bright clothing, always signal your lane changes or turns, keep your headlights on, stay out of the blind spots of other vehicles.
  3. Keep a safe distance between yourself and other vehicles.
  4. Use the whole lane.
  5. Pass safely – check your blind spot as you turn, don’t try to overtake another vehicle, and always signal.

Wear Proper Protective Clothing

  1. Always wear a helmet. If your helmet becomes damaged, replace it. Consult a professional dealer on proper fit.
  2. Wear eye protection – use a helmet with a shield, a pair of goggles, or use glasses with shatterproof lenses.
  3. Jackets and pants made of strong material should always be worn. Look for jackets with zippers to allow for air to pass through.
  4. Proper riding gloves should always be worn, and over the ankle boots with rubber soles and a good tread should be chosen.
  5. When riding at night, makes sure the riding clothing you choose reflects light.
