Louisville Highway Driving Tips

There’s no doubt that safe driving on Louisville roads takes all of your focus and attention.  The best way not to be involved in an accident is to adjust your driving appropriately and respond not just to changing road conditions, but to the type of roadway you’re traveling.

This week we wanted to highlight some of the top tips for sharing Louisville highways with other drivers.

  1. Plan your route ahead of time and prepare your vehicle for the trip - Before setting out; know your exit by name and number. Many highway accidents are caused by unexpected lane changes. If you’re visiting friends and family out of town, give them a quick call and ask if they’re aware of any local construction along your route. Plan time into your travel schedule for delays with the added congestion on the roadways during the holidays, this will reduce your anxiety and stress. Check your wipers and fluids, and have your radiator and cooling system serviced.
  2. Be aware of changes in weather – Not only should you be aware of the weather conditions when you set out, but keep in mind conditions can change as you travel, as well as change depending on the time of day.
  3. Know your limitations and take breaks as and when you feel you need them.  Don't drive when you’re feeling tired or physically ill.  Also minimize your distractions, save that text message or phone call for when you’re off the road.
  4. Be aware of truck blind spots - When sharing the road with large trucks; be aware of their blind spots.  If you can't see the truck driver in their mirrors then they can’t see you. Remember, trucks are heavier and take longer to make a complete stop, so avoid cutting quickly in front of them, many can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and may need up to 100 yards to stop.
  5. Slow Down - Holiday travel creates greater volume on Louisville roadways. Allow plenty of space between yourself and the cars around you and reduce your speed. Remember, the faster you’re going, the more time you’re going to need to stop.

And our two most important tips:

  1. Buckle up - Seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent. Make sure there is a working seat belt for each passenger, and that they wear it.
  2. Please, don’t drink and drive.
